Background of
the Pensacola Beach Advocates

 |
Pensacola Beach
Advocates, Inc. (PBA) is a new Florida not for profit corporation.
Most of us are not looking for another meeting to attend, but we do
have an interest in the issues affecting our community. There are
times some of the common concerns of Pensacola Beach stakeholders
are best represented by an active, organized citizens group.

No such group has been visible on Pensacola Beach for a number of
years. In the Spring of 2008, local politicians were considering
several critical issues with far reaching implications for Pensacola
Beach. A small group of concerned beach people utilizing the
resources of the Tax Suit Liaison Committee and the Pensacola Beach
Chamber of Commerce organized a Pensacola Beach Citizens Forum,
which was held on May 12, 2008.

The turnout for the Citizens Forum was remarkable. About 330 people
showed up for an update on the property tax litigation and to learn
more about the long term implications of the tax issue on the SRIA
and fee simple title. Many leaseholders took part in a Speaker’s
Forum after the presentations. A survey was made available to gather
information on leaseholders’ views and comments on issues. With the
exception of a few undecided respondents, everyone who completed a
survey agreed there is a need for an organized citizens group on the
Beach.

A Steering Committee was formed to develop the organization that is
Pensacola Beach Advocates. We hope you will join us in our attempt
to become “Informed Citizens Giving a Voice to the Beach”.

The following served on the PBA Steering Committee: Sally
Chamberlin, Jim Cox, Lila Cox, Lowell Graves, Lois Hausman, Scott
Holland, Sandi Johnson, Shelley Johnson, Todd McCurdy, Darell
McIntyre, Max Scroggin, Steve Shell, Chris Shearman, Bob Sprowls,
Glenn Windham.
